2/19/10

A few days ago, I commented that I bought two new ties at a thrift store. The purple on the far left and the orange tie were the two, with the black tie being a purchase from earlier in the week and the purple on the far right being the tie I'll be wearing for my sister's wedding tomorrow. I really love how well the tie goes with the suit and I'm really excited to see how well the tie, pocket square and shoes (which I finally bought today) all come together in a finished product.

I bet you can tell what event will encompass tomorrow's photo, right?

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but among the many things I collected as a kid were sports cards. The set in this binder is the semi-key 1988-89 Fleer basketball set that was a favorite of mine in my early days of collecting due to the look of the cards and the many valuable rookie cards in the set. Even within a few years of the cards hitting the market, packs sold for more than a set sells for now. The value kept me from purchasing one until last year, and I'm glad that I did, as my collection really feels more complete. This also makes up for my elementary school classmate Nathan's aunt making him reverse the trading of cards from this set that I made with him in third or fourth grade due to their value. At the time, she was right, but how are you going to college on that $50-75 set now?

At a thrift store on my birthday (yes, today was my birthday) I bought a pair of jeans, this tie, a second tie and a belt for $12. My favorite of those items though is this tie. Not only do I love the color, but I love the pattern. My sister's wedding colors are purple and if the ties for her wedding don't arrive in the next 72 hours, I'm going to lobby for this one. A long shot yes, but this is a tough tie to beat.

I admit that this is a pretty bad photo. It's of the contents of a box that filled a legal size box of stuff that I bought on eBay from about 2000-2004, including band presskit photos, magazines and even movie posters. Most of these things need a new home, though the items I want to get rid of the most are likely the least valuable.

2/15/10

On this Presidents Day, I'm reminded of the absolute fascination I had with presidential history. These particular books (which are now significantly out of date) were among my favorites on the subject. On a day like this, I'm grateful that my dad was always willing to buy me books, regardless of the cost.

Even if it's $35 in 1989 or 1990 for a book that was 25 years old at the time.

On Wednesday, we had our class Valentine's Day celebration, and though I'm not a huge candy person (and was ill at the time) I was grateful for the candy I received from the kids and the staff. My family and friends will be even more grateful, as I plan on giving most of it to them. Another note about this photo: I always wanted this to be the photo for February 14th, so I (and others) had to refrain from eating any of it until today.

This is my inexpensive Crate brand guitar that is in about the same condition today as it was the day I bought it twelve or so years ago. That has to do more with a lack of playing it than my great job at taking care of it. Once I learn how to put new strings on it I'd like to learn to play it or at least learn if it's a decent guitar.

This is the second photo in a row featuring Converse shoes. There's no story to this except to say that I took this while watching the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

2/11/10

All week I kept seeing these blue Converse marked at 50% off of an already low price in the discount section of a local grocery store and kept hoping they'd still be around when I actually had money. I pulled every trick in the book to keep them hidden from turning the box around to putting them on the bottom shelf so that they'd be harder to see. Upon my trip to purchase them, I saw that the price had been discounted to 60% and grabbed them immediately. Now, a green pair (which I'm not too keen on) is also discounted to this price (making them $21.99) and I'll probably pick those up if the price comes down another 10%.

Earlier this week, my family found three things while cleaning: a cassette tape featuring two songs I wrote at age thirteen, the owner's manual to my car and most importantly, an uncashed paycheck from my last job dated three years ago this week, which had never been opened. You may ask how that's possible, and to make a long story short, it was due to me suddenly making more money and being used to living on the old amount, so I was accumulating checks faster than I could spend them. This was one of those that simply got misplaced and not noticed due to me not needing money at the time. It has since been reissued and is good to cash, giving me almost $400 I didn't expect to have.

This was yet another placeholder photo taken early in the day with the hope that I'd find something better later on. Unfortunately, I completely forgot about the project later in the day and thus this is the photo for the 9th of February.

2/8/10

While watching a college basketball game, I caught the reflection of the television in a spindle of DVD-R's that I had on my desk. It took a few tries due to focus, but I had a more successful photo than I thought possible come out as a result.

One of the many great things about having a job again is I can resume selling my collection of nearly everything on eBay again. Among those items are these four keyboards that are all extremely popular, sell for $50+ and cost me less than $3.00 each. As much fun as they are, I'd much rather have the money and the space than these items in the house.

2/6/10

This is a stack of records that were not purchased at a thrift store and all were purchased before I owned a record player. In the stack are a number that I'm selling (The Anniversary) a number that I already own on CD (Sahara Hotnights, Jenny Lewis) and still more that are rare. I have no room to put them until I get rid of more stuff, which will hopefully be soon.

My two newest record acquisitions? Fanfarlo's Reservoir (shown) and Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) hidden underneath it. Total spent? $1.98. I really like the Fanfarlo album cover and though I've yet to listen to it yet, at least it has served a purpose as a great album cover.

2/4/10

At the end of the day on my first week at my new job, we worked with students on arts and crafts. I helped a student who was unable to complete any of the project by themselves and enjoyed my creation so much that I kept the one that I made and created a second for the student. Crazy, I know, but I have to admit to having a fondness for my creation.

2/3/10

This comes from what will likely continue to be an ongoing subject of taking photos of ordinary things at unusual angles. This of course is the living room cable box and VCR and the stack of DVD-R's that I use on a second VCR not pictured. I actually really like this photo and it only came about because I used it as a placeholder when worried I'd not find a better subject for the rest of the day.

2/2/10

There's really not much of an explanation for this. This is my binder from my senior year of high school and my four years of college. Like a time capsule, it remains untouched from 2004, complete with an ancient planner and even a few pages of class notes from my time at Weber State.

2/1/10

It's tough to make out, but this is a childrens bookshelf that I paid $5 for at a yard sale with the intention of using it for my video game systems. I had it all planned out until I realized that I had no room for it. For years it has sat and collected dust and its first significant movement in that time took place today. Why? Well, it needed to be moved so that my dad could correctly install the door that I incorrectly installed a few weeks ago.

I can't say that I'm nuts about the photo, but it was the most significant event of the day aside from that whole starting a new job thing.
